The Opening Hand is a written document you can act on — not a conversation you have to remember. Every engagement includes the same seven things, regardless of your business.

  • 60 – 90 minute Discovery Interview – We dig into your business, your customers, what you’ve tried, and what’s working. Recorded so you can revisit it.
  • SWOT Analysis – Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats — but specific to your market, not a template dump.
  • Target Audience Profile – Up to three customer personas, including where to find them online and what moves them.
  • Competitive Snapshot – Three to five local competitors analyzed for positioning, pricing, and what they’re missing.
  • Written Marketing Plan – Specific actions to take over the next 3 – 6 months, in priority order. You’ll know what to do first, what can wait, and what to skip entirely.
  • Service Recommendations with Quotes – If the plan calls for specific marketing services, we include quotes at our partner rate — 20% off retail, available only to our clients.
  • 30 Minute Review Call – We walk through the plan together, answer questions, and make sure you leave knowing exactly how to start.

How It Works

Two weeks, three steps

  1. Week 0: Intro Call. Book a free 15-minute call where we will confirm fit, answer questions, and schedule your discovery interview. No sales pitch, no pressure. If The Opening Hand isn’t right for your business, I’ll tell you.
  2. Week 1: Discovery Interview. A 60 – 90 minute conversation about your business, your customers, and your current marketing. Most of the value comes from asking the questions nobody else has bothered to ask.
  3. Week 2: Your Marketing Plan + walk-through. You receive the written plan by the end of week 2. We meet for a 30-minute walk-through to review recommendations, service quotes, and next steps. You leave with a document that maps your path to growth.

Most marketing consultations are free. That’s because the consultation is a sales pitch — the agency is betting you’ll buy their services, so they give away the diagnosis to close the sale.

$500 is priced to be accessible — a fraction of what one month of the wrong agency would cost you. If the plan recommends services we can provide, you get them at 20% off retail. If it recommends something we don’t do, we’ll still tell you. That’s the deal.

The Person Behind the Planning

John Cochener is a fourth-generation entrepreneur raised on business and marketing. He studied Cognitive Science at Northwestern University and earned a Master’s in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago – a long way of saying he spent a decade learning how people actually make decisions. Beyond schooling, John has worked as a market researcher, started two successful education businesses, and since moving to Las Vegas, focused on helping small businesses here grow the way his have in the past.

John created The Opening Hand after watching too many small business owners buy marketing services they didn’t need, from agencies that never bothered to ask what the business actually did. You deserve advice first.

Q: What makes this different from a free consultation? A free consultation is structured to sell you services. The Opening Hand is structured to tell you what your business actually needs – even if the answer is “don’t hire us.” Because you’re paying for the advice, you get advice, not a sales pitch.

Q. What if I already have an agency I’m working with? Bring their work to the discovery call. A second opinion is often the fastest way to figure out whether your current agency is earning their fee – or whether you’re paying for services that aren’t moving the needle.

Q. What if the plan recommends services you don’t provide? You still get the recommendation, and if possible, a referral. The Opening Hand is about what your business needs, not what we happen to sell. If the plan points to specialists we trust, we’ll name them.

Q. Do I have to buy services from you after? No. The plan is yours. Execute it yourself, with another agency, or with us. If the plan recommends services we offer, you get them at 20% off retail as a Opening Hand client – but it is always your choice.

Q. What if I change my mind? Is there a refund policy? Yes, and it’s clearly tiered so nobody has to argue about it:

  • Before the Discovery Interview: The 15-minute intro call is free. If you decide The Opening Hand isn’t right for you before we do the Discovery Interview, you pay nothing.
  • Right after the Discovery Interview: If the Discovery Interview tells you this isn’t the right fit, let us know before we start drafting and you get a 50% refund ($250).
  • Within One Week of the Discovery Interview, before Plan is delivered: If you change your mind while we’re still writing, you get a 25% refund ($125). The lower rate reflects the work already done.
  • After the Plan is delivered: The Plan is yours. At that point the product has been delivered and the engagement is complete.

Q. Do I have to be in Las Vegas? The Opening Hand is designed for Las Vegas and Henderson small businesses because local-market knowledge is part of the product. If you’re outside the area, book an intro call and we’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit.
